INDIANA'S HISTORIC NATIONAL ROAD (U.S. 40)
– America's first highway is now a National Scenic Byway. Started in 1806, the road began in Cumberland, MD and was carved westward for
pioneers heading toward the sparsely populated Midwest. The Indiana portion was begun in 1829 and completed about 1834. When the road was built
in Indiana, only four towns were in its path: Richmond, Centerville, Indianapolis and Terre Haute. Today, driving Indiana's National
Road evokes a sense of traveling through the passageways of history from early 19th century architecture and 1890s mile markers (only
found in Wayne County) to nostalgic gas stations, historic monuments, museums and genuine Midwestern scenic beauty.
